Raksha Bandhan is a special occasion for siblings of Hindu tradition which is celebrated in the full moon month( Shravana) which comes in the month of July or August. The word ‘Raksha Bandhan’ means ‘The knot of protection’. On this auspicious festival, the family dresses up in traditional attires and the sister ties a rakhi which is a sacred thread on her brother’s wrist and prays for his well being. The brother then gives his sister a gift. They also exchange sweets and the sister puts a ‘tilak’ on the brother’s forehead. This beautiful tradition strengthens and celebrates the soulful bond between a brother and a sister. Brothers and sisters promise to protect each other always no matter what. It is not always celebrated by only a brother and sister, it is also celebrated between cousins, friends or people who care about each other. There are a number of Hindu myths which talk about the history of Raksha Bandhan like the story of Mughal Emperor Humayun and Rani Karnavati.

The festival is celebrated throughout India, but the Northern and Western part of India celebrates it majorly. Raksha Bandhan has a varied significance in the Southern and Coastal regions of India.

Raksha Bandhan is called Nariyal Purnima or coconut full moon in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka which make up the Western Ghats. Raksha Bandhan in these regions signifies the beginning of a new season for those dependent on the sea.

The Raksha Bandhan day is called Shravani or Kajari Purnima in the states – Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. In these places, Raksha Bandhan is a very important day for farmers and women who have sons. The Raksha Bandhan day is celebrated as Pavitropana in Gujarat. Raksha Bandhan is the day when people perform the grand pooja or the worship of the three-eyed god, Lord Shiva.

Just like all Indian festivals, this festival is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm. As in the Hindi language, they say, ‘Dhoom Dhaam Se’ which means in an extremely grand manner.

The history of Raksha Bandhan goes way back to the different Hindu myths like the myths of Draupadi and Krishna, Lord Ganesha and Santhoshi Maa, King Bali and Goddess Laxmi, Yama and Yamuna and Mughal Emperor Humayun and Rani Karnavati. These myths talk about a sacred thread which is tied on the brother’s wrist and the brother gives his word for her protection throughout his life.

This beautiful and traditional festival celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters and brings them more closer. Ths sister prays for her brother’s well being. This festival is not just celebrated by blood relations but also between people who care about each other.
