Republic day parades are the main attractions of the Republic day events that are carried out in Delhi and is organised by the Ministry of Defence. The Republic day celebrations last for three days. The first parade was held in 1950 and it has been held every year since then. The first event is the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar award ceremony followed by Republic day parade on 26th Jan and then the beating retreat ceremony.
The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2020 was conferred to 49 extraordinary children under bravery, innovation, scholastic and sports categories by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on 22nd January 2020.
The parade marches from the Rashtrapathi Bhavan along the Rajpath, until the India Gate. It opens with the unfurling of the national flag by the President of India. The contingents from several regiments of the army, navy, ait force, police forces, NCC and NSS along with their bands march past in all their finery and official decorations. The President of India who is Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces takes the salute.
This is followed by Tableau from various states signifying their culture and social heritage which is colourful to watch.
The floats also include the display of government policies, departments such as water and sanitation, industrial trade, housing and urban affairs.
A performance by the border security force motorcycle stunt team, showcase of weapon and combat vehicles of the defence immensely impresses the crowd that gathers to witness the parade. Various school students from across the country with their energy and vigour dance on tribal theme songs depicting the uniqueness of the state and spirits of bravery.
Since 1950, India has been hosting head of state or government of another country as the State Guest of Honour for Republic day celebrations in New Delhi. This year for the Republic day 2020 celebrations, President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro has been invited to be the guest of honour.
Full dress rehearsal of this year’s parade took place on the Jan 23 ahead of Republic Day celebrations. This Republic Day, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) women bikers will perform gravity-defying bike stunts. This year, the parade will also include Dhanush 145 mm 52 caliber Howitzers which have been recently inducted into the Army.
A beating retreat ceremony on 29th January at the Rashtrapathi Bhawan signifies the end of this astounding parade.
